SKDUN World Shotokan Championships 2009
The England (SEKU) squad led by Sensei Mick Dewey and Terry Oliver, and including Sensei's Al Lewis and Chris Carr recently travelled to the city of Eger, in Hungary's famous wine growing region, for the 17th World Shotokan Karate Championships 2009.

The event is held over 2 days with a day allotted before the competition for weighing in, registration and technical meeting etc. We arrived in good time for the official business and to sample the local hospitality and surroundings.
The actual tournament arena is located in the city's park which, with it's autumnal colours on display provided a pleasant distraction from the long days ahead.
In retrospect, it appears that the arena did not have the capacity for the amount of competitors (900 approx), which affected the programme over the weekend but there were some outstanding performances by some truly world class competitors.
The opening day held the individual events in which members of the squad aquitted themselves very well in both kata and kumite just missing out before the finals. Noteably, Steve Hollister and Shaun Eglinton both achieved podium spots, silver and bronze respectively in the keenly contested veteran kata and both with outstanding performances of Unsu.

Additionally, in the kumite events each squad individual performed to their highest levels. It should be noted that most of the participating nations are multi federation squads. This puts the achievements of the SEKU squad into perspective albeit that we have become accustom to bringing home a significant amount of prizes! Day 1 ended at 11.00pm
Day 2 was the realm of the team events. The international team consisting of Dave Galloway, Matt Powell, Lee Wilkinson, Keith Williams, Shaun Eglinton and Graham Rowley first faced the Hungarian national team with the expected partisan local support. This was an exciting event with England winning (by quite a margin) the first (D. Galloway), Second (L. Wilkinson) and then the third (M. Powell) bouts to take a comprehensive victory to the next round. England v Romania - It has to be said that the Romanians are an impressive squad with regular medal winners across all categories and their national team consisted of 5 individual world champions at different weights! Nevertheless, they noticeably upped a gear to face the England team. First bout-D. Galloway v. C. Cheles. This was a well matched pair with both competitors using all of the area searching for a scoring opportunity. Ultimately Dave won the bout to put England 1-0 up. Next out was Lee Wilkinson v. B. Lipianu. Another good match between Lee and the current -80kg kumite and Senior world champion. The Romanian man won this bout to make the overall scores 1-1. Matt Powell v. the other Cheles twin, Iulianu. Matt had performed well all weekend and this bout was no different. A well contested match with the decision going to the Romanian. Keith Williams v. Radu Todiras the Romanian squad captain. Both men could be said of 'stocky build'. Radu is about 12 inches taller than Keith though! A tense and strategic match with again a victory to Romania and the overall win. Romania went on to become world champions. This was a good test for the SEKU team and I think all are looking forward to a rematch in 2010.

The weekend ended with the usual sayonara party with which The English can claim to match anyone in the world. The feeling after the exhaustive trip is that many positives came from our trip to Hungary. The youngsters amongst the squad can see what they need to do to improve on this years performance and there was confirmation (if it was needed) that seniors can easily compete on the world stage and can beat anyone on the day.
Well done to all. SKDUN 2010 here we come!

Mick Dewey spent the last weekend touring the South West for Kyu grading courses at Helston and
Saturday 22nd August saw Chief Instructor Mick Dewey travel to deepest Cornwall for a visit to the Helston Karate Club who's Instructor is Amanda Jury 1st Dan. Amanda stages her club gradings two and sometimes three a year and when she is able, transports her members into
This time however, they held their own Kyu grading at the historic Theatre House in the centre of Helston. Knowing that Amanda would have drilled the examinees in their grading examination requirements thoroughly, Mick put the class through it's paces with a combination of kicks and punches that they then had to defend against - it was good fun and the class responded very well. This was followed by Heian and Tekki Kata. When the class was over, Mick took Amanda and the black belts aside and introduced them to the Kata Jitte.
After a break for 'Pasties' the Grading exam followed, grades ranged from beginner through to 1st Kyu and apart from the usual minor gliches all were successful
At the end of the day Isobelle Goode 1st Dan & Sam Orchard were presented with their Dan Grade Diplomas following their successful attempt at the Black and Brown Belt Course Plymouth 7th June - congratulations to them both.
Despite their isolation - Helston is seventy miles from the nearest SEKU Club, Saltash - Amanda is doing a sterling job and is flying the SEKU flag.
Sunday23rd Agust 2009
Mick travelled to
Again the class was aimed away from the grading syllabus and given over to lower grades with a combination of kicks and punches plus a bit of extra spice thrown in for the higher grades. All enjoyed themselves, the second part of the class was reserved for Heian Kata revision.
All Clubs on the day enjoyed a very successful pass rate and the standard was very high - congratulations to examinees and club Instructors alike.
As with the Helston Club, there were some Dan Grade successes from the previous Black and Brown Belt Course 7th June and Diplomas were presented to: Ian Bradburn 2nd Dan (Plympton) & Robert Hughes 3rd Dan (Saltash) Unfortunately Jason Hollister 2nd Dan (Saltash) & Sarah Danby 1st Dan (Plympton) were not in attendance through illness and could not be presented, they will receive their Diplomas at club level form their respective Instructors at a later date.

Sunday 7th of June was a day of blistering sunshine and glorious barbeques, or so those that trained on the Plymouth B& B course were told. However the sunshine and the barbeques could wait, because the day was packed with an intensity and atmosphere that SEKU instructors love to install on such courses.
The first session was started by Sensei O'Donnell and utilised a range of techniques to illustrate how to gradually develop intensity of a warm up using progressively dynamic karate specific movements. As often is the case Sensei O'Donnell commanded the utmost effort from his students, even though the emphasis was on relaxing whilst moving through the attacks it would appear the heat in the dojo rose a centigrade or two in the process.
Following on from the kion components, Sensei Dewey 7th Dan and SEKU Chief Instructor, delivered an explosive and insightful look at the brown belt kata Jion, with several applications to test the efficiency of the karatekas's understanding of the kata movements. The repetition of the kata and it's subcomponent combinations served well to test individuals physical and mental endurance and two individuals that captivated this were current SEKU National Kata Champion, Paul Uren and SEKU's own Shaun Eglington, Current World JSKA Kata Champion. Both of these individuals were invited by Sensei Dewey to demonstrate Jion kata and did so with breath taking style.
Having completed the first session Sensei's Dewey, O'Donnell and Smith took the composed grading students off for their various dan grade examinations and left the remaining students under the supervision of SEKU Squad Kumite Coach Sensei Hollister and SEKU Kata Coach Sensei Crowe. Gojushiho Dai was the choice for the first part of the session and Sensei Crowe gave black and brown belts a chance to explore this advanced kata. The kumite components of this dual lead class looked at the zanshin aspect of pair work and Sensei Holister stressed the importance of having intent and confidence in each technique and movement executed, be it competition kumite or dojo kumite. Whilst one would expect the tempo and intensity to naturally taper on such a warm day, this could not be further from the truth and both instructors were able to maintain the high levels of output from the students.
For those in the main dojo the session came to a close with Sensei Crowe reminding students that, whilst it is important to attend black and brown belt courses to get the chance to challange and work towards new and senior kata's, it must also be remembered that even the first kata will not have been fully mastered. This was illustrated poetically with karateka working on performing kion kata with speed and power 'backward'.
Although the session had finished for those in the main dojo, several thoughts were to club mates and friends that we still grading and many stayed on to hear the successful news that hard training does pay off! So a big congratulations to all those that graded successfully.

Shobu-Ippon International Tournament 2009-05-10
On Saturday 9th May, the Shotokan of England attending the Shobu-Ippon event in Guildford. This year the event attracted an exceptionally high quality field to which the squad excelled across the various categories.
The squad were without some of the usual stalwarts of Shaun Eglinton, Keith Williams and Lee Hollister but some new faces made their impact. Not literally! Peter Turrell, Lee Wilkinson and Mick Bernetta aquitted themselves very well and are sure to be regulars in future events.
Noteable performances on the day were many. Mike Grimwood from Saltash reached the silver medal position in the cadet kumite. Along with George Oliver(semi finalist), Sam Weaver and Chris McMullan, all young men are undoubtedly destined to be prolific winners of the future.
Hannah Day, for her performance of Gojushihosho which had the audience enthralled and deservedly became the ladies kata champion. Karen Galloway, for her silver medal in the ladies kumite following her recent title of SEKU ladies kumite champion.
Ben Mayer, certainly has stepped another level based on his performance on the day. Ben now competes in the senior men's event which as always, are hotly contested even amongst SEKU team mates. Old the day, Ben defeated several recognised high quality competitors and held George Best (twice world champ) to a draw.
SEKU dominated the team kata event with Jason Hollister, Mike Grimwood and Hannah Day just edging the decision over Dave Galloway, Sam Weaver and George Oliver. SEKU gold and silver.
Individual men's kata saw vice captain Matt Powell in the evening finals but just being outside of the medal places. Men's individual kumite champion over this select field saw Squad captain Dave Galloway take this supreme title. Dave is surely a name that his peers do not hope to see in the draw at this current time and in this form. Invariably always in the mix in every event
There are always little side stories to any competition day and this is no different but the main point of this article demonstrates the team spirit amongst this squad and this is down to the hard work given by each individual. Next stop World Championships-Hungary!

Competition Results from the SEKU National 2009
On Saturday the 4th April 2009 SEKU held their National Championships at the newly vamped Mountbattern Centre in Portsmouth. The Championships are always well attended by high standard karateka from SEKU and this year was no different. That said there were one or two noticeable changes made and the new trophies that had been provided by sponsors Viviers, Taskmaster UK and Silver Fox Graphic Designs, added to the drive of the competitors.

Sports Award Success for George Oliver of Lovedean Karate Club
On Wednesday 25th March George Oliver and his proud father Terry Oliver, both of Sensei Brian Smith's Lovedean Karate Club, attended the prestigious Hampshire and IOW sports awards. The event was held at the Rose bowl Cricket ground with all the civic heads of each representing borough in the county in attendance. This was truly a special night with many Olympians nominated for awards along with those who are just starting off in the sporting careers.
George was nominated for an award having previously won the Senior Sportsman of the year and the Havant Borough Sports Council Sports Person of the Year award for his achievements in Karate.
Having won a Bronze medal at the JSKA World Championships 2008 and also won a Silver medal at the same championships in the individual competition, George was a clear choice in a tough category to be awarded as Hampshire & IOW Junior Sports Person of The Year 2009.
Well done George.
Diploma Presentation at Newport KC
Sensei Dewey was over at Newport Karate Club on the Isle of Wight on Sunday 15th February to teach a session and present SEKU Diplomas for Mick Lambert 3rd Dan and Malcolm Bradley with his 4th Dan.
