Uxbridge Machi Dojo - RAF Uxbridge, Middlesex

HISTORY

The club started up at RAF Uxbridge in 1980 and Ken Lyons the present instructor began training there as a white belt in 1994. In those days it was affiliated to the Karate Union of Great Britain. In 1998 Frank Hatton (SEKU 1st Dan) took over the club and affiliation changed to the Shotokan of England Karate Union. Frank was posted to Gibraltar two years later and Ken, who was then a brown belt (1st Kyu), took on the job as club instructor in order to keep the club alive. RAF Uxbridge closed down in April 2010 and the club moved to RAF Northolt. simultaneously, Ken set up another venue at Bishopshalt School in Uxbridge. This means that the Machi Dojo is open four nights a week, operating from Bishopshalt School on Mondays and Wednesdays and RAF Northolt on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ken's black belt is now looking a little worn as Karate appear to taken over his life. The doors of Uxbridge Machi Dojo are open to anyone who wants to learn and practice Karate.

ZANSHIN PRESS

In addition to being the club instructor, Ken manages Zanshin Press and produces the SEKU newsletters (SEKU "Update" and "Squad News") and is always on the lookout for interest stories, the latest news about SEKU members and Martial Arts in general. Ken also compiled the Shotokan Pocket Book available from all good book stores (e.g. Amazon.com) The book contains Japanese phrases, terms and names of the techniques used in Shotokan Dojos and in competitions. This is an ideal Christmas or Birthday Present for your favourite Kohai or Sempai. (I expect Sensei has already got a copy tucked inside his Gi and that's why he knows so much). The book was designed to be a comprehensive companion to Karateka of all levels.
